Animal Portrait

Nikon D700 | North Florida

Animal Portrait photography isolates the animal as the primary subject, emphasizing character, detail, and expression.

To identify this genre, look for:

  • The animal filling most of the frame
  • Clear focus on the eyes, face, or defining features
  • Backgrounds that are simple or softly blurred
  • A sense of personality or presence

The goal is connection—bringing the viewer close to the animal itself.

I am always drawn to the eyes—they are where the connection begins.
If the eyes are not sharp, the portrait will not feel alive.
