INTRO

Over the course of my career, I have found no medium-format camera system as complete, or as durable, as Hasselblad. Much of my commercial work was done on location, where equipment was constantly packed, transported, assembled, and used under real-world conditions. Through decades of commercial use, Hasselblad repeatedly proved itself in ways many other systems did not.

Over the years, I tested several other medium-format camera systems, but issues such as plastic housings, weak lens mounts, or fragile electronic construction often revealed their limitations rather quickly. This page documents my continued use of Hasselblad cameras, both film and digital, and the core equipment I rely on for my work today.

Below you’ll find direct access to film cameras, digital cameras, lenses, and accessories, organized as a working reference and expanded over time as I add and refine the content.

HASSELBLAD HISTORICAL

The Pacific Rim Camera Reference Library contains an extensive collection of historical Hasselblad catalogs and technical documentation covering many decades of photographic equipment.

THE HASSELBLAD MODULAR SYSTEM

Hasselblad cameras are fully modular. Each system begins with a camera body and expands through interchangeable lenses, viewfinders, film magazines, digital backs, and accessories. These components are interchangeable across bodies, allowing photographers to configure the system to suit nearly any type of work.

In my own workflow, I frequently combine Hasselblad lenses, viewfinders, and digital backs with ALPA technical cameras. Because ALPA does not offer comparable modular components in the same way Hasselblad does, this pairing has proven both seamless and highly flexible.

What continues to distinguish Hasselblad is its long-term reliability, mechanical consistency, and adaptability across decades of photographic practice. Few medium-format systems have demonstrated this level of longevity.

DIGITAL CAMERAS

HASSELBLAD 907X 50c + 45P LENS: MY WALK AROUND MF CAMERA

907x 50c

The Hasselblad 907x 50c draws inspiration from the iconic Hasselblad 500 series while incorporating modern digital capture. Its 50-megapixel CFV II 50C digital back seamlessly attaches to 500-series film bodies and, with a flash sync cable, to technical cameras as well. When paired with the 907x body and an XCD lens, it also supports autofocus. It offers photographers automatic exposure, bracketing functions, and streamlined operation—features that blend classic design with modern usability.

Despite its compact size, the 907x benefits from a grip or strap for comfortable handling. I secure mine with a wrist strap, which works well for my shooting style. When cradled in the hands, it handles similarly to a 500-series body equipped with a waist-level finder, maintaining that familiar Hasselblad feel.

I originally acquired the 907x specifically for use with the CFV II 50C, replacing my earlier CFV50C. Later, I added the XCD 45P lens to explore the native XCD system. The pairing proved seamless, and I successfully used this setup handheld for street-style photography with excellent results. Now, in 2025, I have completed a three-lens XCD “P” kit—the 28, 45, and 75—which should serve me well for quite some time.

Hasselblad offers a dedicated Control Grip, but I chose a different solution. As shown above, I use the Kirk Universal L-Bracket paired with a SmallRig Wooden Side Handle. For most of my cameras, including the 907x, I rely on the Peak Design Wrist Strap, which provides secure handling without adding bulk.

907x 100c

The 907x 100c is a modern medium-format digital camera that combines Hasselblad’s design heritage with today’s resolution and color fidelity. At its core is a 100-megapixel BSI CMOS sensor delivering 16-bit color depth and approximately 15 stops of dynamic range. The result is exceptional detail and tonal richness, well-suited for large-format printing and high-end commercial applications.

The design pays direct homage to Hasselblad’s classic V-series cameras. The slim 907x body pairs with the CFV 100c digital back to form a fully modular system that can be used with native XCD lenses or adapted for legendary V-system glass. Its tilting rear touchscreen supports waist-level shooting, closely echoing the experience of working with film Hasselblads while providing all the benefits of modern digital capture.

Unlike many contemporary digital cameras that emphasize speed and automation, the 907x 100c is built around precision and craftsmanship. It does not offer high-frame-rate burst shooting, in-body image stabilization, or video-centric features. Instead, it encourages a slower, more deliberate working method—ideal for photographers who value intentional image-making and want the highest possible image quality straight from the camera.

When capturing stitched landscapes on clear, wind-free days, I rely on a proven panoramic support setup: an RRS Series 1 tripod paired with an Acratech Panoramic Head and Leveling Base, complemented by a FotoPro Eagle 6 gimbal-style head, as shown above.

This configuration supports both my 907x, fitted with a Kirk Universal L-Bracket, and my ALPA TC, which features a dedicated attachment shoe, allowing me to switch between systems as needed.

While I have successfully used this stitching setup with my Hasselblad 500-series film bodies, I generally prefer the 907x for stitching. When I choose to stitch with the CFi 100 mm or CFi 180 mm lenses, I use the XV lens adapter for its lighter weight compared to the 500-series bodies.

I am uncertain whether I will ever add a longer lens to the 907x system; at present, my longest native lens, the 75P, is working well for stitching.

Pictured above in the first image is the CFV II 50c mounted on the 907x body and lens. The CFV II 50c is the updated version of the original CFV50c digital back and retains the classic Hasselblad V-system interface, allowing it to be used with the included 907x body as well as all Hasselblad V-series cameras. Styled after the traditional A12 film back, the digital back centers around a 43.8 × 32.9 mm, 50-megapixel CMOS sensor capable of producing high-resolution images with approximately 14 stops of dynamic range, 16-bit color depth, and an ISO range of 100–25,600.

The CFV II 50c incorporates a 3.2-inch, 2.4-million-dot rear tilting touchscreen LCD. Unlike the original CFV50c, which used an external battery grip, the rechargeable lithium-ion battery in the CFV II 50c is housed internally, resulting in a cleaner and more streamlined overall profile. Built-in Wi-Fi also enables wireless remote control and file transfer through Hasselblad Phocus Mobile 2.

The primary differences between the original CFV50c and the CFV II 50c are the updated user interface, the addition of the rear tilting screen, the internally housed battery design, and the inclusion of an electronic shutter in the newer model. Photographers who own both backs, as I do, may notice additional UI tools in the CFV II 50c that I do not personally use in my workflow. The sensor itself is identical in both versions. The differences are limited to the screen, UI, battery configuration, electronic shutter option, and screen resolution. While the Mark II version does provide a higher-resolution display, that alone was not compelling enough for me to upgrade. However, after using the electronic shutter with my ALPA and Hasselblad 500 bodies, I came to prefer the CFV II 50c.

I upgraded from the original CFV50c only after it was physically damaged and had to be sent to Sweden for a sensor glass replacement. I needed a working digital back immediately for commercial use, and during that period my backup Phase One P45 CCD back filled the role. However, the color palette of the P45 differs noticeably from the Hasselblad CMOS back. When maintaining consistency across a client’s website, catalogs, and web graphics, color continuity is critical.

Hasselblad returned my CFV50c in approximately three to four weeks, and the repair cost was about $2,500. At that point, I decided to sell the original CFV50c. Based on what I learned while using the P45 as a backup, the CFV50c would not have seen enough continued use to justify keeping it. I now prefer having both a CMOS and a CCD digital back available in my equipment cabinet for maximum flexibility and differing color characteristics.

DIGITAL BACK: CFV50C

The CFV 50c back is shown in the third image above. It features the world’s first medium-format CMOS sensor, representing a major step forward in digital imaging with the introduction of Live View (LV) to the Hasselblad V system. This breakthrough allowed photographers to achieve modern digital capture while continuing to work with classic V-series cameras using Live View for critical focusing.

Like the CFV II 50c, the CFV 50c uses a 43.8 × 32.9 mm, 50-megapixel CMOS sensor, delivering high-resolution imagery with approximately 14 stops of dynamic range, 16-bit color depth, and an ISO range of 100–25,600.

The CFV 50c was my first Hasselblad digital back and my first to offer Live View. LV alone was a transformative capability at the time, and shortly after its release, Phase One introduced a digital back using the same sensor and LV technology. The CFV 50c was an excellent performer. I ultimately sold mine after it was returned from Sweden with a new protective sensor glass. It served me very well and would likely still be in my kit today had I not needed to replace it.

FOCUSING ISSUES: V-SERIES CAMERAS & DIGITAL BACKS

Using a digital back on vintage mechanical cameras such as Hasselblad V-series bodies introduces unique focusing challenges. Film and digital sensors differ in their tolerance for focus accuracy: film is comparatively forgiving, while digital capture demands far greater precision at the sensor plane.

Because these cameras are fully mechanical, components such as the mirror, which reflects the image to the focusing screen, can drift out of perfect alignment over time. Traditional focusing relies on this mirror-and-screen system, and any misalignment between those components and the sensor plane can result in focusing errors. Mirror shift is one of the most common contributors to this issue.

The introduction of Live View (LV) on digital backs has largely mitigated these problems. LV enables direct focusing between the lens and the sensor itself, bypassing the mirror entirely. Even if the mirror or focusing screen is slightly misaligned, Live View renders that misalignment irrelevant, ensuring precise focus directly at the sensor.

An alternative method is tethered focusing using a computer. However, many modern computers no longer support the legacy ports required by older CCD digital backs. While an older laptop with FireWire or similar connections may solve this, it often introduces workflow inefficiencies.

For these reasons, when budget allows, I strongly recommend choosing a digital back equipped with Live View. It eliminates mirror-alignment uncertainties and provides a far more reliable and efficient focusing workflow.

USING A DIGITAL BACK IN ELECTRONIC MODE

When shooting out in the landscape with my 907x, I prefer using the digital back in Electronic Shutter mode whenever possible. There are advantages to this approach, particularly its ease of use, but also disadvantages. Like all electronic shutters, it is not ideal when the subject is moving or when windy conditions may introduce motion into the scene.

That said, the simplest and most efficient method I’ve found for using a digital back on my 503CX is to rely on the electronic shutter. By setting the 503CX to T (Time) lock in Bulb mode, I eliminate the need for a locking shutter cable and avoid advancing the film crank altogether.

There are a few limitations to this workflow. It is not suitable for moving subjects, and it cannot be used with studio strobe lighting. However, for most natural-light photography, this method transforms the 503CX into a highly flexible tool capable of shooting both film and digital within the Hasselblad system. It is especially effective for travel and location work, where speed, simplicity, and a lighter working rhythm become important advantages.

USING A DIGITAL BACK WITH MECHANICAL SHUTTER ONLY

📝 STEPS FOR SHOOTING CFV50c ON HASSELBLAD 500

Preparing the Camera
1. Attach the CFV50c digital back securely to the Hasselblad camera body.
2. Insert a charged battery and formatted memory card into the digital back.
3. Attach and cock the Hasselblad lens normally.
4. Turn on the CFV50c digital back.
5. Set the desired ISO on the digital back.
6. Set the desired shutter speed on the lens.
7. Set the desired aperture on the lens.
8. Use the waist-level finder or prism finder for rough composition only.

Because the CFV50c sensor is a 44×33 mm rectangle while the Hasselblad focusing screen was designed for a 6×6 cm film frame, the viewfinder does not accurately represent the captured image area. In addition, digital capture has a much thinner focus tolerance than film, making critical focus through the traditional viewfinder unreliable for many situations.

Live View Focusing Procedure
9. Set the lens to B (Bulb) mode.
10. Lock the lens shutter open using the camera’s T-lock or a locking cable release.
11. Lock the mirror up so the sensor has a direct optical path through the lens.
12. Activate Live View on the CFV50c.
13. Double-tap the screen for 100% magnification.
14. Focus critically using Live View.
15. Exit Live View after focus has been confirmed.
16. Release the lens shutter from Bulb mode.
17. Return the lens to the desired working shutter speed.
18. Re-cock the camera and lens if necessary.

Making the Exposure
19. Press the mirror-up for exposures longer than 1/125.
20. Press the camera shutter release.
21. The mirror rises,the lens' leaf shutter opens and closes for the exposure.
22. The CFV50c records the image automatically.
23. Wait briefly for the file to finish writing to the memory card.
24. Advance the winding crank again to re-cock the camera and prepare for the next exposure.

Important Notes for New Owners
- The CFV50c does not use an electronic shutter.
- The lens shutter controls exposure exactly like shooting film.
- Live View focusing is strongly recommended for critically sharp images.
- The focusing screen was made for film and is not optimal for digital focusing.
- Digital capture reveals focus errors much more readily than film.
- Flash synchronization works normally; leaf shutters synchronize at all shutter speeds.
- Once accustomed to workflow, CFV50c blends beautifully with 500 series experience.

📝 STEPS FOR SHOOTING CFV50c ON VIEW CAMERA

The original CFV50c does not contain an electronic shutter. Exposure is controlled entirely by the mechanical shutter inside the lens mounted to the view camera. Unlike film photography, digital capture requires extremely precise focus, making Live View focusing essential for obtaining critically sharp images.

Preparing the Camera
1. Mount CFV50c securely to camera using adapter plate or sliding back.
2. Insert a charged battery and formatted memory card into the digital back.
3. Mount the lens to the view camera.
4. Connect flash sync cable between lens shutter and CFV50c.
5. If using strobes/flash, add sync cable from CFV50c to flash trigger.
6. Open the lens using the preview lever or by setting the shutter to T or B mode.
7. Open the aperture fully for brightest ground glass viewing.
8. Compose the image on the ground glass.
9. Apply camera movements as needed, including rise, fall, shift, tilt, or swing.
10. Perform an initial rough focus on the ground glass

Live View Focusing Procedure
11. Close aperture to desired working range if needed for focus evaluation.
12. Activate Live View on the CFV50c.
13. Use 100% magnification on the rear screen for critical focus.
14. Fine-tune focus carefully while checking important areas of the composition.
15. Recheck camera movements if necessary, since t/s adjustments can alter focus planes.
16. Confirm final composition and focus through Live View.

Because digital capture has an extremely thin focus tolerance compared to sheet film, Live View focusing is strongly recommended. Even very small focusing errors become visible when using high-resolution digital backs.

Preparing for Exposure
17. Close the lens shutter.
18. Set the desired shutter speed on the lens.
19. Set the desired working aperture.
20. Cock the lens shutter.
21. If using a sliding back:
-- Slide the ground glass out of position.
-- Move the CFV50c into capture position.
22. Remove the dark slide if applicable.
23. Wait a moment for any vibration to settle.

Making the Exposure
24. Trip the shutter using a cable release.
25. The lens shutter opens and closes mechanically to make the exposure.
26. The CFV50c records the image automatically through the sync cable connection.
27. Wait briefly for the file to finish writing to the memory card.
28. Reinsert the dark slide if applicable.
29. Return the sliding back to viewing position if continuing to compose additional images.

Important Notes for New Owners
- The CFV50c does not use an electronic shutter.
- The mechanical lens shutter controls the exposure.
- The sync cable connection between lens and CFV50c is required for proper operation.
- Live View focusing is highly recommended for accurate sharpness.
- Camera movements can shift focus planes dramatically, check Live View.
- Once accustomed to workflow, CFV50c blends beautifully with the View Camera experience.

TECHNICAL CAMERAS & HASSELBLAD DIGITAL BACKS

The primary reason I prefer the CFV series of digital backs over Hasselblad’s X1D and X2D camera line is my long-standing preference for using digital backs on technical cameras, as well as on 500-series bodies with V-system lenses.

If you do not require camera movements, whether through the lens, the digital back, or both, Hasselblad’s X-series cameras are excellent choices. I do occasionally use the 907x 50c as a walk-around camera with a compact three-lens XCD kit consisting of the 28P, 45P, and 75P, and for that role it performs beautifully.

My core medium format digital workflow, however, remains centered around ALPA technical cameras, along with occasional use of 4×5 view cameras fitted with digital backs. When traveling, I often pair a Hasselblad 501CM with the 907x, creating a flexible and highly enjoyable hybrid film-and-digital kit.

Over the years, I have successfully used Hasselblad digital backs on the following technical cameras: the ALPA Max, STC, SWA, and TC; the Linhof 3000; the Cambo Wide 650; and the Sinar Norma.

I have not acquired the CFV 100c, but I have been giving it considerable thought for several reasons, particularly its potential use with my FlexBody for tabletop and still-life photography in the studio. Below is my current rationale as I continue to weigh the idea.

RATIONALE FOR THE CFV 100c

I may eventually acquire the CFV 100c for use with the FlexBody and ALPA systems. At the time of this writing, however, I remain on the fence, as 50MP is still more than adequate for my current needs. The reasons I continue to consider the 100c include:

- BSI sensor technology for improved performance with ALPA SK 28mm and 35XL lenses
- The ability to shoot in square format while still retaining approximately 75MP
- Slightly greater dynamic range at base ISO 64
- Cleaner files when downsampling, resulting in a more refined overall look
- More forgiving files when working quickly in changing light conditions

I plan to spend more time working in the studio with the FlexBody throughout 2026 to determine whether it can evolve into a practical still-life technical camera for my workflow. One reason I have delayed exploring that direction further is the inability to shoot square compositions while retaining 50MP on the CFV 50c II. The CFV 100c changes that equation considerably, and the addition of the BSI sensor technology makes the upgrade even more appealing.

DIGITAL BACK ACCESSORIES

DIGITAL BACK ACCESSORIES: LOUPE, PELICAN CASE, MEMORY CARDS

HOODMAN 3.0 HOODLOUPE

If you plan to work in bright, sunny conditions with a digital back, a loupe designed specifically for camera LCD screens is strongly recommended. I’ve used the Hoodman 3.0 HoodLoupe since 2011, beginning with my first digital back, a Phase One P45. Although the P45 did not offer Live View, I still needed clear visibility of on-screen data for proper operation—and that need led me to the HoodLoupe 3.0. It has consistently met my visibility requirements when working outdoors in bright light.

The HoodLoupe is constructed from a durable, rubber-like material that does not scratch the screen and remains comfortable to use for extended periods. Hoodman now offers an updated version, the HoodLoupe 3.2, with improved optics.

PELICAN CASE 1150

Depending on the camera system I’m using with my CFV II 50c—either a 503CX or an ALPA technical camera—the digital back is often transported separately from the 907x. For each setup, I use a different protective case.

When traveling with the 503CX, I use a DIY Tamrac lens case to secure the digital back alongside the camera body and lenses inside a backpack. For location work with my ALPA technical camera system, the digital back is housed in a Pelican 1150 hard case along with four spare batteries. When traveling with the 907x, the digital back and body are stored together in a Gnass case (now discontinued), similar in form to the Stone Photo Gear 49495 case.

MEMORY CARDS

When selecting memory cards for digital backs, it is best to purchase the fastest and most reliable cards your budget allows. The cards shown above are the ones I currently use with my CFV II 50c. They were the fastest options available when I acquired the back and continue to perform reliably.

The 501CM, FlexBody, and 503CX camera bodies are shown above, presented without lenses, film magazines, or digital backs. This represents the starting point for configuring a Hasselblad system with specific components. In my workflow, I use the 501CM primarily with film magazines, the 503CX with a digital back, and the FlexBody with either.

503CX

The 503CX is my digital and film travel camera and features a custom mask on the focusing screen that matches the sensor size of my digital back. Manufactured from 1988 to 1994, it is available in chrome or black and was designed with an automatic dedicated flash system, a much brighter Acute-Matte focusing screen, and a new Palpas coating on the interior surfaces to reduce flare. I acquired the 503CX because I wanted the latest body in the 500 series, which includes the Time Exposure Lock (TEL). The TEL has two settings: O (disengaged) and T (engaged). The TEL is used for time exposures set at Bulb (B) when a locked exposure is required. Set the lens to B, depress the shutter, and secure it with the catch set to T. This is especially useful when working with Live View on a digital back, instead of using a mechanical locking release cable to hold the shutter open.

The winding crank can only be advanced once the lock is reset to O, and a cable release cannot be used while the TEL is engaged. If you enjoy engaging the electronic shutter with your digital back and a Hasselblad V body, as I do, you will appreciate the TEL option.

501CM IMAGE: A THING OF BEAUTY

501CM

The 501CM is one of the last bodies in Hasselblad’s 500 series. Production began in 1997 and ended in 2005. The Gliding Mirror System (GMS) ensures there is no vignetting in the finder image with focal lengths over 100 mm. The 501CM was initially available as either a kit or a standalone body in chrome or black. You can view the 501CM user manual here.

I use my 501CM exclusively as a film camera. It features a bright Acute-Matte D Grid focusing screen (#42217). I prefer grid lines on most focusing screens and use them as a design aid for composition. When viewing through my preferred finder, the PME51—with its built-in exposure meter and upright view—everything I see in the finder is included in the final composition.

Within the 60, 80, 100, 120, and 180mm focal lengths, I typically select three to four lenses for photography trips. They fit comfortably in my preferred backpacks—the Shimoda Urban Explore 20 or the Shimoda Explore v2 25 Women’s Starter—along with a 501CM body fitted with a PME51 viewfinder and a film magazine. I also pack the 907x 50c with the V-mount lens adapter and related accessories.

FLEXBODY

The FlexBody is a compact view camera that performs much like a 4×5, but in a 6cm×6cm format. Its ±30° rear tilt allows precise control over the plane of focus without requiring excessive stopping down. The ±15mm of shift helps manage perspective, while the 22mm bellows extension enables close-up and macro photography with the CF/i 120mm Macro lens without the need for extension tubes.

Hasselblad produced the FlexBody from 1995 through 2003. It accepts all CF lenses, Hasselblad film magazines, viewfinders, and V-series digital backs. When additional extension is not needed, the bellows can remain fully retracted, allowing the FlexBody to operate much like a standard 500-series camera body.

The FlexBody was produced in two slightly different versions. The original model, simply called the “FlexBody,” includes a bubble level integrated into the shift control knob, and the ground glass is permanently glued into the frame, making it difficult to remove or replace.

The later model, called the “FlexBody CP,” relocated the bubble level to the removable focusing screen adapter frame and introduced a user removable ground glass holder. This allows photographers to replace older focusing screens with brighter, more modern options such as the Hasselblad Acute Matte screen. The “CP” stands for “Complete Package.”

COULD THE FLEXBODY BE USED AS A MODERN DIGITAL TECH CAMERA?

While the FlexBody can be used with a digital back, it is not a direct replacement for a modern digital technical camera. Camera movements are more limited compared to contemporary systems such as the ALPA MAX or Cambo Actus, and once a digital back is installed, the back itself cannot be rotated. As a result, images are naturally composed in the horizontal orientation unless the entire FlexBody is rotated 90 degrees for vertical compositions. When this is done, all camera movements rotate as well, which can significantly reduce practical control depending on the subject and setup.

One possible workaround is to use a high-megapixel digital back and compose using a square crop in Live View. This is an approach I am actively exploring in 2026 for tabletop and still-life photography in the studio (see above image). My goal is to determine whether the FlexBody can realistically satisfy my studio shooting needs well enough to justify upgrading to the CFV 100c. I will continue updating this page as I gain more real-world experience and eventually reach a conclusion one way or the other.

HASSELBLAD FILM MAGAZINES: C12, A12, A24

In the past, I used Hasselblad V cameras on shooting sets with multiple magazines, some with 120/220 color film, others with 120 B&W, another for Polaroid shots to test the color temperature or direction of lighting, and lastly, many special event jobs required using 70mm magazines. I like the convenience of switching different magazines, viewfinders, screens, etc., and I appreciate Hasselblad’s modular system as this deep dive into what I shoot continues to confirm this liking.

There are a few different-looking magazines for the V system, some that look different but function the same, and some that look different but do indeed operate a bit differently. I photographed three magazine backs for the above graphic to show some differences. Once you become familiar with the V system film magazines (backs), you can quickly distinguish what makes them different operationally.

HASSELBLAD FILM MAGAZINE & GROUND GLASS C12 ON ALPA TC

C 12 MAGAZINE

The first photo in the graphic shows what is known as a “C” magazine. Hasselblad originally called it “Magazine 12” based on an early datasheet named “220 film.” It may have later earned the “C” designation for “classic” from photographers to distinguish it from the later “A” “automatic” film magazines.

You should understand why these particular non-automatic film magazines are popular today. For photographers like myself who enjoy shooting medium format film and digital, the “C” magazine can be used on a camera that takes a Hasselblad V digital back plate. Manual film advancement is required because these cameras lack the film advance mechanism built into a Hasselblad camera. The manual film advancement feature makes the “C” backs usable on some non-Hasselblad cameras.

On a “C” magazine, we use its rear peephole (covered with a circular metal plate in the photo above) to see the film frame numbers on its backing paper. This and the manual film advancing allow me to shoot 120 film on my ALPA cameras without needing to purchase an expensive, heavy, non-6×6 format ALPA-Linhof film magazine. I own two very clean “C” magazines manufactured in 1957 & 1967, and I added a Quick Winding Crank #41076 to each. Shortly after acquiring them, I had them rebuilt as needed and replaced all seals so they would last another 50 years. I use them on my Hasselblad and ALPA cameras with excellent results.

HASSELBLAD FILM MAGAZINE DIFFERENCES

A 12 MAGAZINE

The second photo shows an older “A 12” magazine. According to the year dating code, this magazine was manufactured in 1972. This magazine has served me well over the years. A primary difference between this “A” magazine and the latest model, as shown in the above graphic (image #3), is the convenience of having a designated area to store the dark slide while shooting. There is little difference besides convenient dark slide storage and updated cosmetics. To my knowledge, the film gate produces the famous ‘two triangle cutouts’ (“V”s for Victor) on the left side of the film frame on all 120/220 Hasselblad film magazines. A 24 MAGAZINE

The third magazine shown in the above graphic is of a late-model A24. I also own a late-model A12 that stays on my 501cm. When I shot special events, I once had six 220 film magazines. You can use 120 film in an A24 magazine, so I have kept mine (see below). You could buy these A24 magazines more reasonably than A12 because 220 film is no longer made, which is a bummer. I prefer the newest film magazines for the dark slide holder and better cosmetics.

70 MAGAZINE

The Hasselblad 70 magazine was produced in several versions. The model I used during my special event photography career allowed up to 72 6×6 exposures on a canister of 70mm perforated film. While the negatives themselves were physically larger than 120/220 negatives because of the perforated film borders, the actual image area remained the same at 54mm × 54mm. Here is its user’s guide.

I used the 70 magazine exclusively with my Hasselblad candid camera setup since I typically worked with multiple cameras during events. Loading the 70 magazine was similar to loading other film magazines, except that a small metal clip was used to secure the open end of the film from the cassette around the take-up spool.

After accumulating around fifty empty canisters from film purchased directly from Kodak, I began respooling my own film from 100-foot rolls. It was certainly convenient, but only a limited number of labs offered development and proofing services for these extra-long rolls.

Many affordable, used, and functional Hasselblad V-series 220 film magazines are on the market. This presents an opportunity for film photographers. XCD LENSES

Hasselblad’s XCD lenses were designed alongside the X-series cameras to offer a modern, mirrorless take on medium-format optics—quiet, leaf-shutter precision in a compact form. Each XCD lens carries Hasselblad’s trademark color fidelity and micro-contrast, but with the convenience of autofocus, close-range performance, and electronically controlled shutters capable of syncing flash at any speed.

For photographers who work with both film and digital (or technical cameras paired with digital backs), the XCD line provides a lightweight, travel-friendly counterpart to the classic V-system lenses. Their rendering is crisp yet natural, with a smooth roll-off that suits portraits, landscapes, still life, and controlled studio work.

MY XCD LENS KIT

I’ve been around the block a few decades when it comes to lenses and Hasselblad gear. A few photographers have asked how I’ve accumulated what I have—especially since I still shoot as much film as digital—and the short answer is: time, intention, and knowing what I actually need.

Hasselblad was the backbone of my commercial career forty years ago, along with a Calumet (Cambo) 4×5. And here’s the distinction: I never stopped shooting film. During the decade when film seemed to be vanishing, and everyone was “going digital,” film gear could be purchased for prices that would make today’s shooters faint. I used that window to refine my film system. Medium format and 4×5 were two formats I knew I would never give up, so I upgraded those systems while the rest of the world moved on.

I arrived late to digital—2006—with a Nikon D200 and a truly mediocre kit lens. It didn’t take long to discover that digital sensors are far less forgiving of optical flaws. Thankfully, as technology evolved, lenses improved, and many classic Hasselblad V lenses (and even some large format lenses) hold up beautifully on digital backs.

When it came time to enter the Hasselblad digital realm, I knew I wasn’t going to start collecting XCD lenses like trading cards. My V lenses already integrate well, and if you’re shooting Hasselblad V glass, it’s because you appreciate their character as much as their system design. So I decided early: a holy trinity of XCD lenses—no more.

Choosing that trio was easy; waiting for them to actually appear was the hard part. Portability and weight were my priorities since these lenses travel with me more than they live in the studio.

My final pick was the “P” line: the XCD 28P, 45P, and 75P. They perform exactly as I need them to—lightweight, sharp, and practical for life on the road.

I am curious about the two zooms—the XCD 20–35mm f/3.2–4.5 and the XCD 35–100mm f/2.8–4—and will eventually rent them. When I do, I’ll report back with my findings.

XCD 28/4 P

The XCD 28P is one of those rare medium-format lenses that practically disappear on the camera — in the best possible way. It’s small, light, and changes the feel of the X-System into something I can comfortably carry all day. On my 907x, it makes medium format feel almost mirrorless-compact.

In use, the lens is quick, quiet, and responsive. Autofocus locks in confidently, and the leaf shutter gives me the luxury of full-speed flash sync, which opens creative options outdoors. The rendering has that familiar Hasselblad clarity: clean detail, gentle contrast, and a natural look that suits landscapes, street scenes, and environmental portraits.

This isn’t a “show off” lens — it’s a practical one. The f/4 aperture keeps it tiny, and while it’s not meant for low-light drama, it excels everywhere else. Its biggest strength is how effortlessly it fits into real life. It’s the lens I take with me because it ends up making more photographs than the heavier, more serious glass.

Bottom line: The 28P is a travel-friendly, everyday wide that delivers strong image quality without weighing me down. It’s the XCD lens that encourages me to shoot more simply because it’s so easy to live with.

XCD 45/4 P

The XCD 45P is the definition of an everyday lens. Its field of view feels natural and intuitive—wide enough for landscapes and environmental portraits, yet close to a classic “normal” perspective for general shooting. What makes it shine is its size. For medium format, it’s surprisingly small and light, turning the X-System into a camera I can comfortably carry all day.

In practical use, the lens is straightforward and dependable. Autofocus is generally quick, and the manual focus ring has a direct, tactile feel that makes fine adjustments easy when I want more control. The leaf shutter adds flexibility by allowing full-speed flash sync, a perk I appreciate in changing light.

Image quality is clean, crisp, and beautifully rendered in that signature Hasselblad way—neutral color, good micro-contrast, and a pleasing level of detail. It doesn’t try to be dramatic or quirky; instead, it delivers consistently great images across a wide range of subjects.

Bottom line: The 45P is a lightweight, versatile workhorse and one of the most practical lenses in the XCD lineup. It’s the lens I depend on when I simply want to go out and make photographs without thinking too hard about my gear.

XCD 75/3.4 P

The XCD 75mm f/3.4 P is one of those lenses that quickly becomes a favorite once it’s on your camera. Its field of view sits in a classic short-tele range for medium format, making it ideal for portraits, detail work, and scenes where you want a bit of compression and separation without feeling too long. On an X-System body, it balances beautifully — not too light, not front-heavy — and feels like a natural extension of my vision rather than a tool I have to wrestle with.

In real-world shooting, the 75P delivers a sense of purposeful precision. Autofocus is smooth and confident for most situations, letting me lock in on my subject without hesitation. The manual focus ring is solid and predictable when I want direct control. Because it shares the same leaf-shutter design as other P-line lenses, I also get full-speed flash sync, which gives me creative flexibility in open shade or bright light.

Optically, the lens has a clarity and character that suit its role well: images are sharp where they need to be, with pleasing rendering that doesn’t feel clinical. Skin tones and textures come through with a natural look, and backgrounds roll off in a flattering way without being distracting. The f/3.4 aperture isn’t about extreme shallow-depth drama, but it gives you just enough separation to make subjects stand out.

What stands out most is how comfortable this lens feels in everyday use. It’s not oversized or intimidating — it’s the kind of lens I reach for when I want dependable results without fuss. Whether shooting portraits, street scenes with a bit of distance, or cropped detail work, the 75P is confident and capable.

Bottom line: A beautifully balanced medium-format short tele that delivers sharp, natural images and inspires me to shoot — not fiddle with settings. It’s a lens that just works, quietly and reliably, in a wide range of real-world situations.

HASSELBLAD V LENSES

HASSELBLAD LENSES: CFE 80, CFI 60, CFI 120, CFI 180, CF 135, CFI 100
The image above shows my current collection of Hasselblad V lenses: the CFE 80/2.8, CFi 60/3.5, 100/3.5, 120/4, and 180/4, along with the CF 135/5.6, which I use with either the bellows unit or a variable extension tube. These lenses serve me well both on the road and in the studio. I also use them occasionally on an ALPA camera, where their quality and character translate beautifully on the CFV II 50c digital back.

IMAGE CIRCLE COVERAGE FOR ‘V’ LENSES

Zeiss has not published official image circle specifications for Hasselblad V lenses, but user experiences shared online can offer some guidance. However, be cautious when reviewing these sources—both Ernst Wildi Hasselblad manuals I own state that Hasselblad Zeiss lenses were designed specifically for the 56mm x 56mm format, with little excess coverage.

If you enjoy using the FlexBody for its movements but find the limited wide-angle lens movement frustrating, keep in mind that this is precisely why the ArcBody was developed. Designed with special Rodenstock lenses featuring larger image circles, the ArcBody offers greater flexibility for movements, addressing the limitations of the FlexBody in wide-angle applications. CFi 60/3.5 DISTAGON T*

The 60/3.5 is a wide-angle lens that does not produce the noticeable, sometimes distorted perspective of the 50/4. It has a comparable FoV of a 33mm lens on a 135 film camera or a full-frame digital. I prefer this lens over the 50/4, which I have used for decades performing special event photography. This lens is very sharp and works well with digital. Here is its datasheet.

CFE 80/2.8 PLANAR T*

I have had a few Hasselblad 80/2.8 Planars in my life. As soon as I think I will no longer need it, I need it again. It is the CFE this time because it was the cleanest one I have found. The Planar lens is the most triumphant design in the history of camera lenses. Its almost symmetrical structure furnishes lens makers with extensive methods to exceptionally correct aberrations, even at wide-open apertures. This forms the perfect foundation for high-end lenses characterized by excellent color correction, rapid speed, a flat image plane (derived from the name), and minimal distortion. The Planar lens design is the basis for most professional ‘workhorse’ lenses used on our planet and in space. Here is its datasheet.

CFi 100/3.5 PLANAR T*

The 100/3.5 is a planar lens with a reputation as the sharpest lens in the Hasselblad V series. Hasselblad states it is an exceptional lens and “is optimized to deliver virtually zero distortion and at the same time extremely well-defined image details – sharpness – over the entire frame, and all this even at full aperture.” It has a comparable FoV of a 54-56mm lens on a 135 film camera or a full-frame digital. CFi 120/4 MAKRO-PLANAR T*

The CFi 120/4 macro lens is a beautiful lens optimized for serious copy work and for half-life-size (1:2) to infinity. It works well with digital and has been my go-to close-up lens for product photography and for digitizing my film. I have used the CFi 120/4 with the FlexBody for macro work and with digitizing film. I use it primarily with a 64-85mm variable extension tube on a Beseler CS copy stand today. I have had fun making abstract images with this setup as well. Its data sheet is here.

CF 135/5.6 MAKRO-PLANAR T*

The CF 135mm f/5.6 is a close-up/macro lens similar to the CFi 120mm f/4 but lacks a built-in focusing mechanism. It was specifically designed for use with a bellows extension. I have used it with the Auto Bellows, achieving life-size (1:1) magnification without difficulty. Additionally, I have paired it with the Variable Extension Tube 64-85 (51691), which is optimized for the 135mm Makro-Planar CF f/5.6, allowing a focusing range from infinity down to 1.15m. CFi 180/4 SONNAR T*

The 180/4 is a telephoto lens. I replaced a CFi 150/4 only because I wanted the extra 30mm reach of the 180. The angle of view between 150 & 180 is more noticeable than I thought. The 180’s reach was well worth any increase in heft as it is an excellent portrait lens and for constructing stitched panos. This lens is sharp and works well with digital. It has a comparable FoV of a 97-100mm lens on a 135 film camera or a full-frame digital. Here is its datasheet.

MACRO & AUTO BELLOWS

HASSELBLAD MACRO: CFi 120/4, CF 135/5.6 + AUTO BELLOWS, EXT TUBES + 2XE

Hasselblad offers several ways to approach macro photography with the 500 series, from specialized lenses to bellows and extension tubes. Two standouts in my own kit are the CFi 120mm f/4 Makro-Planar T* and the CF 135mm f/5.6 Makro-Planar T*.

The 120mm is the more versatile of the two, focusing from half-life-size (1:2) to infinity. It’s excellent for product photography, digitizing film, and even creating abstract images. I’ve used it with the FlexBody and now mainly pair it with the 64–85mm variable extension tube on a copy stand, where it performs beautifully with both film and digital.

The 135mm is designed to work with bellows or the variable extension tube and can achieve life-size (1:1) magnification. While it lacks its own focusing mechanism, in the right setup it delivers superb results, especially for high-magnification work.

Both lenses reflect Hasselblad’s strength in precision optics—offering different paths to macro photography, whether you prefer the convenience of the 120mm or the specialized versatility of the 135mm.

HASSELBLAD AUTO BELLOWS (40517)

The Hasselblad Automatic Bellows (AB) connects the camera to the lens, allowing the camera to function as if the lens is directly attached. The AB features adjustable knobs and an extension range from 63.5mm to 202mm. When used with the CF 135/5.6 Makro-Planar lens, it provides a focusing range from infinity to a 1:1 reproduction scale. Also shown above with the AB & CF 135/5.6 is the Lens Shade (40525), which has the transparency holder attached.

EXTENSION TUBES: VARIABLE & 56MM

Hasselblad produced a range of extension tubes for the 500 series in various millimeter lengths, including 8, 10, 16, 21, 32, 55, and 56. They produced a variable tube, the 64-85mm, which I use with the CFi 120/4 and 135/5.6. Tubes can be used individually or combined with other tubes. I have used two 56mm tubes together (pictured above) for macro work. It is not recommended to use more than three tubes at once. Extension tubes must be attached to the camera body before the lens is mounted on the tube. When using multiple tubes, attach the first one to the camera body, then add additional tubes, and finally attach the lens. To remove the lens, first detach it from the extension tube, then remove the tube from the camera body. If using several tubes, remove the one closest to the lens first, then work back toward the camera body

THE 2XE CONVERTER

The 2XE Converter is compatible with all Hasselblad V fixed lenses, except the CF 135/5.6. It doubles the lens’s focal length. For example, using 2XE with the CFi 180/4 changes the focal length to 360mm. Since teleconverters magnify the lens, they also highlight quality faults. They can produce excellent images when paired with top-quality lenses, such as Hasselblad lenses. The “XE” in 2XE indicates that it has an electronic Databus connection for the metering system in 200-series cameras. I use the 2XE converter for macro work and creating abstract digital images.

I'M NOT A TYPICAL MACRO PHOTOGRAPHER
Rather than documenting small subjects, I use macro tools to explore abstraction, diving deep into materials like glass, transparent plastics, gemstones, soap bubbles, and more. My goal is abstract art, even though the subjects themselves are tiny and demand the precision that macro photography gear provides. It is a fun hobby for me.

Pictured above are the viewfinders I use the most. They are not the only Hasselblad viewfinders I use, just the ones that get the most mileage. I will go into greater detail about why I use these viewfinders and what cameras or shooting scenarios I use them for.

The PME51 is my most used viewfinder (VF) when shooting the 501cm and 503cx cameras. The viewing angle is 45° to the vertical, and the focusing image is unreversed and magnified 3x. It has a centered-weight integral meter that is fast and accurate and is designed to be used with the Acute-Matte focusing screen. The operating knobs and buttons are countersunk, and the scales and indicators are behind windows to protect them from damage and the elements. It has a cold shoe on top that I installed a bubble level but will slip in a Profoto Air (remote trigger) when using the 501cm/503cx in the studio.

The PME51 uses a 6V PX28 battery, which I fulfill with a Duracell 28L 6V lithium battery. I highlight the 45° to the vertical above to remind folks this is not a 90° VF, but I do use it as such. I stand slightly to the side when I flip the camera to the vertical position (using a digital back) and get used to it. Even though I have a PM90 VF in the gear closet, I prefer the PME51 as my ‘daily viewfinder,’ so to speak. I found in photography; I can use gear that others seem to have conniptions over.

Below are instructions on how to meter with the PME51. I include this checklist because a few photographers who purchased their PME51 used without instructions were using it incorrectly. If you have a PME51 or plan on getting one for your 500 V camera, read over the checklist to see how you are supposed to use this meter, it might change how you shoot with it a little.

OPERATING THE PME51:
Readings must ALWAYS be taken with the LENS WIDE OPEN.
1. Set the lens maximum aperture in the left side window.
2. Set the ASA/ISO of your film, left of the lens aperture setting.
3. Compose image, press meter start button; leave for ½ second is best.
4. EV is displayed on meter's EV scale underneath VF image for 10 seconds.
5. Transfer EV reading to orange EV scale on right-hand side of lens.>
6. Adjust lens aperture to your shooting aperture. Repeat to memory.

WAIST-LEVEL FINDER (#42315)

The foldable Hasselblad waist-level finder (WLF) shields the focusing screen from stray light. It displays a full, upright, but reversed image even with the camera at hip level. It has a built-in magnifier that enlarges the image 4.5x, which I appreciate greatly. Hasselblad made interchangeable correction magnifiers ranging from -4 to +3 diopters for this finder, but I have never used one.

The best use I find for the WLF is in its folded position on the camera to protect the focusing screens while in storage and transport. I had used WLFs in the past during indoor shoots when my back was up against a wall, but I found it annoying if it was a group portrait session and having to remember, since the image is reversed, to look up and tell the subjects to go a little more right or left. If I did it while looking through the WLF, I would say the wrong direction 50% of the time. But truth be told, I find it better for this type of shooting (back up against the wall) than the Magnifying Hood #52096 (below).

I have a WLF for my ALPA cameras since I need to protect the Hasselblad ground glass I use with the ALPAs, and because the magnifier 4.5x is an excellent focusing tool. I love how Hasselblad gear will integrate with my ALPA gear, and up next is the viewfinder I use the most with my ALPA and FlexBody cameras.

REFLEX VIEWFINDER RMFX (#47070)

Designed for use on the SW/SWA/SWC and Flexbody cameras with the necessary focusing screens #41025 or #41050 (see below), the Reflex Viewfinder RMfx (RMfx) provides a comfortable working position from a 10° viewing angle. The RMfx has an enlarged eyepiece to provide a full-screen image for users with eyeglasses and displays an upright and non-reversed image. I used this viewfinder with the FlexBody and adapted it for use with my ALPA cameras for composing before shooting with a digital back or film magazine. The RMfx + #41050 setup is superior to anything ALPA has offered for viewfinder/ground glass options.

MAGNIFYING HOOD (#52096)

Better than the WLF for some photographers but not as convenient for others, the Magnifying Hood #52096 (MH) does not fold but does not take up too much space in a camera bag. It features an adjustable magnifying scope with a range of -3 to +3 magnification, and the image is upright but reversed, similar to the WLF. When my back is against a wall, this viewfinder can help, except I cannot see the entire image at a glance. I need to move my head around, from corner to corner, when looking through the MH, which is inconvenient.

Known to many photographers as the chimney viewfinder or hood, the #52096 can also be used as a critical focusing lens for the ground glass on my large format cameras and is perfect for viewing negatives or slides on the lightbox or contact prints. The only thing missing is a cord to wear around your neck. These are not expensive, and if you already have a WLF and are looking for a backup substitute that can also aid as a loupe for your view camera or film viewing, this might interest you.

SWC FOCUSING SCREEN/GROUND GLASS ADAPTER (#41050)

The SWC Focusing Screen Adapter (FSA) #41050 was made explicitly for the Hasselblad SWC and FlexBody cameras. It has a line grid and a split image rangefinder in the center. It is made with the same material as the Acute Matte screen. The top and bottom lines in the grid outline the borders of the 6×4.5 cm image format. The FSA attaches to the camera in the same way as a film magazine. It accepts all viewfinders of the Hasselblad V system. The older, similar model, #40125, is not made with the Acute Matte material. I had one, and because I was familiar with the brightness of the Acute Matte screen, I immediately noticed the difference and sought a replacement #41050.

Besides using #41050 on the FlexBody, I use it on my ALPA TC and SWA cameras, along with the Reflex Viewfinder RMfx. To do this, you must have an ALPA-Hasselblad digital back plate. Install the digital plate, then install the #41050 and any Hasselblad V viewfinder you choose. I sometimes walk around with my ALPA TC with the #41050 and RMfx, looking for compositions before shooting it with a digital back. It works well for my needs and is bright, making it easy to focus on.

PM90 (#42288)

The PM90 #42288 is a low-profile prism viewfinder that allows the photographer to see at the eye-level position of the camera. It is suited for switching between portrait and landscape composing and shooting. It has a 2x enlarged, unreversed image that covers the entire focusing screen. The large, easily interchangeable eyepiece is designed to provide eyeglass wearers with an image that is free from vignetting. Corrective power eyepiece replacements range from -4 to +3 diopters.

I find this viewfinder a pain to use with a digital back. It can be challenging to install and remove due to its low profile. It can also be difficult to install/remove with a film magazine, but this is less costly than a digital back. You do not want to risk the safety of an expensive digital back; that’s a lot of stress!

Here it is if you want a non-metering 90° viewfinder for your 500/200 series camera. I do not use the PM90 often enough to justify keeping it, as I have grown accustomed to shooting with the PME45 in portrait orientation.

PRISM FINDER NC-2

The NC-2 provides a 45° sighting angle about the lens’s optical axis. The view provided is an unreversed, 3x enlarged image on the focusing screen—the short light path of the NC-2 results in minimal light loss. I used the NC-2 for over a decade with my 500C and 500CM cameras at special events, portrait sittings in the studio, and in environmental settings. It served me well. If you’re looking for a non-metered 45° prism finder, this might be the right choice. Due to their age, I recommend purchasing from a reputable dealer with a clearly stated return policy if the mirror, glass, or overall condition does not meet your expectations.

MAGNIFYING HOOD 4×4 DPS (#72534)

The Magnifying Hood 4×4 DPS #72534 was designed to help users focus while utilizing a digital back on a Hasselblad V series camera, FlexBody, or a Hasselblad digital back on a view camera. They were recommended for use with a 37mm x 37mm sensor area (and were marginally usable for the 44mm x 33mm sensor of CFV-50C and other digital backs). I have a digital sliding back, made by Kapture Group (now defunct), for my Sinar Norma + Hasselblad V digital back, which came with this magnifier hood. It does a good job, but I no longer need it because of having Live View with the CFV II 50c.

PRISM FINDER HC-3/70 (#52043)

Designed for use with the larger A70 film back and a V-series camera, the HC-3 features a 45 ° sighting angle about the lens’s optical axis. The view provided is an unreversed, 4x-enlarged image on the focusing screen, and the HC-3’s eyepiece is adjustable ± 5 diopters. I used this viewfinder for over a decade while shooting 70mm at special events. It was a lifesaver if you shot 70mm, which many photographers did not. Back then, I would purchase 100-foot rolls of Kodak VPS III film and load it into 70mm cassettes. Kodak Portra is what VPS III evolved into. I am unsure if this viewfinder is still necessary today, given the availability of 70mm film and the need to use an A70 magazine. You could still use it, but it might look a bit awkward.

HASSELBLAD CRANK #44040, PROSHADE 6093T, KNOB #44024

RAPID WINDING CRANK #44040

The Hasselblad winding knob on the 500 series cameras can be replaced with a Rapid Winding Crank for faster film winding. It increases shooting speed and advances the film quickly and smoothly. Marketed as an excellent advantage for studio, fashion, and wedding photographers, but realistically speaking, it is beneficial for all types of shooting, unless the mounting of your camera prevents its usage, which is why it was removed on my 503cx (more below). If your V series camera did not come with one (originally sold as an accessory), I recommend it for its easier grip and faster film winding.

PROSHADE 6093T

A versatile lens tool, the Hasselblad Proshade 6093T bellows lens shade/hood is a handy accessory. It fits all Hasselblad lenses, from 38mm to 500mm, using the various adapters available. It gives you total control over the lens shading and prevents image degradation from stray or direct light on the lens surface. The 6093T can be used with various types of filters. Bayonet filters mount on the front of the lens and can be changed without detaching the 6093T. Hasselblad, 93mm filters, go behind the 93mm lens adapter, and the 93mm Polarizing filter can be operated with the 6093T attached to the lens.

The rear filter holder accepts 100mm square resin, glass, or gelatin filters, and multiple filters with a total thickness of 4mm can be inserted simultaneously. The rear holder drops down and out of the way when needed. This is a deal-maker for anyone like me who uses 10± ND filters, such as Lee’s Big Stopper series of filters. Find your composition, load the filter, and drop the rear holder so you can see through the lens. Ensure the focus is still where you want it, then push the rear holder back up and shoot.

I like all of the above, plus it folds! My preference for single-lens hoods, especially those made of rubber, is no secret. However, when I need to use filters while shooting, this is my hood of choice. It takes up hardly any room in my travel pack, and I would keep one in my gear closet even if I did not use it as often as I do with 100mm filters. If you want a Proshade for your Hasselblad, seriously consider the 6093T. You can view the Proshade 6093T user manual here.

WINDING KNOB #44024

The Winding Knob #44024 is the standard knob with all-new V-series cameras. My 501cm and 503cx had Rapid Winding Cranks (RWC) installed when I purchased them. I prefer the RWC except when my digital V, the 503cx, is used with my panoramic setup. When the 503cx is placed sideways and in the vertical position for making pano slices with my Fotopro E-6 Gimbal, the RWC is too difficult to grab onto because there is not enough room between the RWC and the tripod—this issue can be easily fixed by installing the Winding Knob #44024.

The Custom Camera Building (CCB) Hasselblad Body Cap & Pinholes should be on your shopping list if you enjoy pinhole photography and own a Hasselblad 200, 500, or 2000 series camera.

My initial feelings about shooting a pinhole negative less than 6x17cm or 4×5″ were not very positive. My thoughts drifted toward the added blurriness a smaller negative might produce. Pinhole images are already unsharp, but just enough that I like them. I assumed shooting a pinhole with a smaller film frame might cause the image to be less likable due to more blur. Boy, was I surprised. Not only were my images artistically fulfilling with the unsharpness I like, but there was an added workflow bonus I had never thought of until my first shooting.

On the 2023 Worldwide Pinhole Day, April 30, I used my Hasselblad 501cm as a pinhole camera for the first time, using the 0.35mm (77mm/220) pinhole. The ability to take a few pinhole images with the CCB body cap in place, then remove it to take one or two images with my CFi 180/4 lens was priceless to this photographer. I had never considered that option before. When I travel with my Hasselblad kit, the CCB Pinhole Cap & Pinholes will travel with it. This is a nice and easy way to be creative with the same subject.

The CCB Hasselblad #4 kit includes five different pinhole sizes, along with the cap and an empty pinhole holder for use alone or to install a customized pinhole. Miroslav Francuz from CCB was kind enough to answer my questions and respond with helpful information about why different pinhole sizes are included in the kit.

HAVING A VARIETY OF PINHOLE SIZES IS GOOD FOR:
(1) Help adjust exposure length (larger pinholes allow more light in)
(2) Create more blur using a pinhole size that is not the ideal size
(3) Try different pinholes with extension tubes and homemade cameras

Thanks to CCB’s kit and the information they provided, I will test these various pinholes on my Hasselblad camera with my digital back before shooting film.
