Sony cameras have been a bit of a side story in my journey. When mirrorless first came out, I couldn’t wait to try it, and Sony was clearly leading the way. In 2012, I picked up a used NEX-7 in mint condition and was blown away by both the technology and the image quality. The catch? Their full-frame lineup looked promising, but the lenses just weren’t there yet. So instead of upgrading, I donated the NEX-7 to a local arts council and carried on with a Nikon D700. Still, I never stopped keeping tabs on Sony. And in 2025, after years of watching them grow, I finally came back with my first Sony full-frame, now my go-to studio camera.
SONY a7RÂ IVA: Photography & Graphic Design

When I added the Sony a7R IVA to my toolbox, it was with two goals in mind: studio work and digitizing film. With a 61-megapixel full-frame sensor, it delivers the kind of detail that pulls every nuance out of film scans while producing impeccably clean files for product shoots, still life photography, and graphic design projects.
For most studio setups, the Sigma 24–70mm f/2.8 DG DN II Art Lens covers my needs beautifully. But when the subject calls for absolute close-up precision, I reach for the FE 90mm f/2.8 Macro G OSS. On the copy stand, it is manual focus for total control, but when pointing the camera at something less predictable, like a moving spider 20 feet away, the autofocus steps in and does a fine job.

The camera’s dynamic range is outstanding, holding onto delicate tonal shifts in shadows and highlights alike, which is exactly what I look for when photographing film or subjects with intricate textures. It’s not the lightest body on the market, but since it spends most of its time anchored in the studio, that’s hardly an issue.
For me, the a7R IVA isn’t meant to replace my other systems; it’s a specialist, and in the high-resolution niche I bought it for, it’s already proving its worth.

The Sony NEX-7 will always hold a special place in my heart. It was my first mirrorless camera and a turning point in my approach to photography. I captured some fantastic images with it, but more importantly, it made me rethink my dependence on DSLRs.
