Digital Composite

A digital composite is an image created by combining two or more photographs or visual elements into a single composition. Unlike a straightforward photograph, which records a single scene, a digital composite is intentionally assembled to produce a final image that could not be created with a single exposure alone.

Composites may range from subtle corrections, such as replacing a distracting background or blending multiple exposures, to elaborate artistic works that combine photographs, illustration, textures, typography, and graphic elements. The goal may be realism, creative expression, or visual storytelling.

Digital composites have become common in commercial photography, advertising, editorial illustration, fine art, and conceptual photography. Advances in digital imaging software have expanded creative possibilities, but the underlying principles remain rooted in traditional darkroom techniques, where photographers combined negatives, masked prints, and manipulated exposures to achieve similar results.

Successful composites rely not only on technical skill but also on careful attention to perspective, lighting, scale, color, and composition. When these elements work together naturally, the individual components become secondary to the finished image.
